The body of a British window cleaner has been found on a Jamaican yacht after being shut down by an 'inexperienced' sailor for a solo adventure around the world.
42-year-old Mark Brennan of South Shields was seen Monday sailing his 30-foot Avio sailing boat 71 miles off the Caribbean island.
Coast Guard found a wrecked corpse in the hull and dumped at Errol Flynn Marina in Port Antonio, where police confirmed it was Mr. Brennan and launched an investigation.
Mr Brennan left the UK on 6 December for a 'trip of a lifetime', according to local police, before sailing in Barbados, across the Atlantic and then driving 162 miles from Granada.
He was reported missing after 10 days, when he was struggling for fuel and without radio, phone or dinghy.
69-year-old Mr Brennan's mother, Marjorie, said: 'He's found and he's very upset. We are waiting for the results of the autopsy. '
The solo adventurer had traveled 1,120 miles since his last sighting, and the Jamaican coast guard was alerted to the presence of a British-flagged vessel by colleagues in the US.
We were approached by the Coast Guard about the ship and after members of our force entered the boat, we found a lifeless male body, said a Defense Force official. We landed the body on the ground and the case is now being investigated by the local police. A post-mortem will be done to establish the cause of death. The Jamaican police will now determine whether any hooliganism was involved.
Northumbria Police said: 'We can confirm that a 42-year-old man from South Shields was reported missing on December 21, when he left for the Caribbean.'Enquiries are continuing to trace him, and we are made aware that authorities in Jamaica have recovered a corpse on a boat.
'A formal identification process is underway but it is suspected that the body is a man of the south shields.
'Jamaican concerned officials are conducting inquiries to establish the cause of death and we will continue to support their investigation in conjunction with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
'The man's family is being assisted by the authorities and they have requested that their privacy be respected at this time'.
A spokesman for the FCO said: 'We are reporting a British man's family missing in the Caribbean and are in contact with Jamaican authorities.'
It was reported that Abrio, who was hoisting the British flag, was taken to a marina in Port Antonio, Jamaica, and Mr Brennan's body was taken home for the funeral.
