According to the Puranas, when Yamdut came to take them to hell after the death of a king, the king told the Yamdoot that what kind of sin have I committed. At that time the Yamdoot said that once he had returned the Brahmin from his house to starve. After that the king asked him for a year. Then the king went to the sages and told the whole story, he told the king to fast and observe the Trayodashi of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month and serve food to the Brahmins.

Years later, when the Yamdoot came to take the king back, he took him to Vishnu Lok instead of hell. Since then, Yamraj is worshiped on this day and in the evening, a lamp is lit in his name.

To make Dhanteras worship Yamaraja, the god of death, make swastikas on an altar (patta) in the evening. Put a lamp on that swastika and light it and put a perforated cowrie in it. Now sprinkle Gangajal around this lamp thrice. Offer Akshat and Mishthan etc. by applying tilak to the lamp. After this, put some Dakshina etc. in it, which later give it to a Brahmin.

Now offer Pushpadi on the lamp. After this, bow the lamp with folded hands and apply tilak to each member of the family. Place the lamp on the right side of the gateway. After worshiping Yama, finally worship Dhanvantari.
